Master’s Programme “Studies in History, Spirituality and Theology, Archaeology, Architecture, Art, Musicology and the Chanting Tradition of Mount Athos”

The Postgraduate Programme aims at the scientific training and qualification of selected graduates in systematic and special studies in History, Spirituality and Theology, Archaeology, Architecture, Art, Musicology and the Chanting Tradition of Mount Athos, as defined in the specific scientific fields.

The Department of Social Theology and Christian Culture of the Faculty of Theology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, following the approval of the Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs (Government Gazette B 3844/2021) and taking into account the growing interest of many Greek and foreign scientists in the issues of the history and spirituality of Mount Athos, as well as the particular art and musical tradition of Mount Athos, establishes a Postgraduate Studies Programme entitled “Studies in the History, Spirituality, Art and Musical Tradition of Mount Athos”, which aims at the scientific training and qualification of selected graduates in systematic and special studies in the History, Spirituality and Theology, Archaeology, Architecture, Art, Musicology and Choral Tradition of Mount Athos, as defined in the specialized scientific fields, and includes the following three specializations:

(a) History and Art of Mount Athos
(b) Theology and Spirituality of Mount Athos
(c) Musical Tradition and Chant Art of Mount Athos

Objectives

The main objectives of the MA Programme, which leads to the award of the Diploma of Postgraduate Studies, are the cultivation and promotion of scientific knowledge and research in the field of Mount Athos studies, which is of great international scientific interest, and the training of postgraduate students with specialist knowledge in the fields of Mount Athos history, spirituality, art, archaeology and architecture, as well as the music and chant tradition of Mount Athos.

Duration of study

The MA Programme “Studies in the History, Spirituality, Art and Musical Tradition of Mount Athos” is a full-time programme of 90 credit units (ECTS), which has a minimum duration of three (3) academic semesters, including the time for the preparation of the postgraduate thesis..

Categories of candidates

The categories of candidates who are accepted to attend the Postgraduate Programme “Studies in the History, Spirituality, Art and Musical Tradition of Mount Athos”, after evaluation by a special committee, are:

  1. Theologians, historians, archaeologists, philologists, musicologists, art historians, architects, lawyers, archivists, museologists, etc, holders of first cycle degrees from higher education institutions (universities and technical universities) in Greece or from similar institutions abroad (recognised by the I.O.A.T.A.P.), or from Higher Ecclesiastical Academies, Pedagogical Academies and Production Schools..
  2. Members of the categories of R.E.P., R.D.I.P. and R.T.E.P. of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (according to paragraph 1 article 34 of Law 4485/2017) may, upon application, be registered as supernumeraries and only one per year, provided that the subject of their degree and the work they perform at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is relevant to the content of the MA Programme.

  3. Certificate of studies with detailed marks
  4. Detailed curriculum vitae and Memorandum of interest
  5. Evidence of research or writing activity, participation in mobility programmes or relevant professional experience (if any)
  6. Copy of identity card or passport
  7. Certificates of knowledge of at least one foreign language (B2 level) or a declaration of proficiency in a foreign language

The calendar period for submitting applications is set according to the relevant notice, which can be found in the Announcements section of this website.

Application fees

Students admitted to the MA Programme “Studies in the History, Spirituality, Art and Musical Tradition of Mount Athos” pay a tuition fee of 1.600 euros for the entire duration of the Programme. The tuition fee is payable upon registration (100 euros) and in three equal instalments of 500 euros at the beginning of each semester of study.

Selection criteria

Candidates will be selected based on the following criteria:

  1. Overall degree level
  2. Previous research or writing activity or participation in mobility programmes
  3. Possession of a second degree or other postgraduate or doctoral qualification
  4. Certified knowledge of a second foreign language
  5. Oral interview

Further clarification will be given with the announcement of the MA Programme, which will be posted on the Department’s website after the publication of the official notice. Sixty-six (66) postgraduate students, twenty-two (22) per specialization, are admitted to the MA Programme.
